Assignment 5

I feel like poetry is a good way for the poet to express themselves and their ideas. Through the use of words and symbolism, I think that they are able to convey their thoughts and emotions in a very beautiful way. Even if there are different interpretations of the same poem, the fact is they portrayed their thoughts and understanding in the poem, so the different variations of its meaning shows just how personal a symbolist poem can truly be.

   The hardest part for me personally was that I didn't really understand the concept of how to write the poem, so I don't think I did a very good job. Since English is still a bit difficult to write in as well, expressing my thoughts and ideas were that much harder as the symbolism I wanted to use didn't really make any sense. As I learn more about poetry through this class as well as other poems, my wish is to be able to write a decent poem that reflects even a small part of my true intentions For now however, I hope I was able to convey at least a fraction of what I intended to in the end.

Assignment 7

How Ezra Pound defines "image" The image is the poet’s pigment. The image is not an idea; it is a radiate node or cluster, a vortex through which and from which and into which ideas are constantly rushing. It is as true for painting and sculpture as it is for poetry. Personally, I like to break the lines based on how I read it when I go over what I had just written/ thought in my mind. This is the method Edward Hirsh also mentioned in his handout. I think it is the easiest and most efficient way to create pauses and dramatic effect, as well as create a setting for the flow and narrative. Another method I like to use when breaking the lines in my poems, is I think about the implication I am trying to get out of it. For instance, thinking of why I would add a pause in that area, or if I changed stanzas here would the way it was being read be improved. Assignment 2

To me, a good poem is one that uses words to create a form of imagery, or evokes a sense of emotion. A poem should be whatever the poet would like it to be, and I think that as long as they are pleased with it, I believe the result is successful. Personally, when I write I like to start with a plan, since it makes it easier to organize my thoughts. Without it, whenever I write I have to keep rearranging the sentences and words to fit better. For poems however, I have to think of a topic/ direction I want to go with; for instance, I need to know that I will be writing about birds if that was what I was going to do. After that, I just think of the words and actions associated with the topic, and am able to write. While I don't understand a lot about poetry, I think this method makes me enjoy writing it, even if it doesn't end up being a good poem.
